Years ago I left Puerto Rico to find a job in the United States. I searched for years, but could not find a job in Puerto Rico. Then I ‘look north’ and after a couple of months I had 2 job offers in the States. I accepted one, bid goodbye to family and friends and emigrated.
Now, after years of collecting personal achievements, I have returned to the island to finish school. I can tell you truly, Puerto Rico is in a worse shape than when I left the island years ago. The level of decay of social and government institutions is beyond belief.
The quality of life has degraded, the cost of living has sky rocketed. Not to mention the high rates violent crimes and levels of mental health issues. When you walk the streets can see more trash and filth. It is seldom that you can stroll about without stumbling with addicts or homeless that roam the streets.
The level of government corruption, at all levels and branches has reached the point of surrealism.
The current government of PR tries to obfuscate the reality that Puerto Rico is a country in crisis. And do not realize that its attitudes and actions are only making things worse. Even if the Resident Commissioner Pierluisi does not want to admit it, Puerto Rico does have overtones of a “totalitarian and dictatorial governments in other parts of the world shows a lack of respect for our people”.
Again thank you Rep. Luis Gutierrez for speaking sense and bringing to the spot light the problems that we have in Puerto Rico
Ps. I was there on May 2010, at the event in front of the White House to protest Arizona SB 1070. I saw you and other been arrested on that day for what you believe. You are a man of action and not words, and I admire you for that.
